Painting the New West
Walking in to the Utah Arts Festival this afternoon, my eyes were stunned in disbelief when I saw these paintings by local artist Mark Knudsen. This is the landscape I know- I am familiar with road markers, brown-on-brown sagebrush, and lonely gas stations. When I see glamorized western landscapes with Indians, sunsets, galloping horses I'll maybe smile, glance and move on. This I understand.

I understand, but I have a hard time appreciating it. Not that I need cowboys and buffaloes, but I do "need" green, and it's so hard to find here. The bleakness and barrenness depicted in these paintings almost frightens me - Ma
