An article titled, "The Case for Working With Your Hands," has been making the rounds. I read it a couple of weeks ago while waiting in the parking lot of The Craftsman's favorite store- he came out with a box of sandpaper and some buffing pads. Very appropriate- you'll understand once you start reading. This well-crafted essay takes the words right out of my mouth when it comes to sticking up for my husband, his career choice, and our outlook on life. He didn't finish college, and although I think education is incredibly important, I learned a long time ago that it's not for everyone- and I still adore him! Imagine that! Here's one of the many highlighted lines on my copy of the piece:
"The trades suffer from low prestige, and I believe this is based on a simple mistake. Because the work is dirty, many people assume it is also stupid. The good life comes in a variety of forms. This variety had become difficult to see; our field of aspiration had narrowed into certain channels. But the current perplexity in the economy seems to be softening our gaze. Our peripheral vision is perhaps recovering, allowing us to consider the full range of lives worth choosing."
It's soothing, while at the same time, invigorating to be handed a healthy dose of reassurance right when you need it most. Ah! The possibilities!
