Just Keeping It Real

Work can sometimes suck. And more likely than not, people will be rude to you while you're at work. The other day a costumer asked where the soaker hoses were, and being an eager and helpful employee, I walked them to the item and presented it. Even the box says it. "Soaker Hose." But the lady wouldn't have it, telling me those were definitely NOT soaker hoses and turned her back on me walking away without a word. I don't expect a "Thank You" or anything, but at least have the decency to wrap-up the interaction.

On the other hand, working hard and being nice to people pays off. Just last week an older woman opened up her world to me- all because I lifted some bags of dirt onto her cart, listened, and then lifted the dirt into the trunk of her car. She told me about how her mission to Hawaii was her last vacation with her husband, who passed away only months after coming home. She told me how she bought "To Kill A Mockingbird" for all of her grandchildren to read, and how proud she is of UVU's newest President- an old friend. When the trunk lid had been closed and my gloves came off, she moved towards me with open arms- a hug was given and received and I thought, "Man, this is what it's all about." Mundane everyday tasks with little, yet not so little, meaningful and oftentimes surprising exchanges scattered here and there.

In the spirit of keeping it real and spreading niceness I have a proposal. I like this print a lot- gonna buy me one and guess what, I'm gonna buy YOU one too! That's right, a good old fashioned fishing pond here at Wildwood. Leave a comment by Sunday 11:59 p.m. and a winner will be randomly chosen.

(Don't know how to leave a comment? It's easy! Just click on the purple link at the end of this post titled "Thoughts." You do not have to have a blog to leave a comment- I allow anoymous commenters, but please remember to leave your name so I know who you are!)

Gosh, I just love you all.

Yesterday at the Homer Spit (I'm in Homer, Alaska, [working hard])I walked by a man who asked for some money. I told him I didn’t have any change, and I kept on walking. Then I thought about it, and decided I would give him some change and strike up a visit with him. So I pulled 2 dollars out of my wallet, turned around, and walked back to him. This was going way out of my comfort zone – but I returned, gave him a couple of dollars, and we had a short visit! He was a good lookin' man, missing teeth, 42 years old, had a stroke, but stayed in Homer, where he felt home - even though he didn't have family in the area. I ended our conversation with, “May God bless you,” and the guy said, “He has, just look,” and he held his hand open with the dollar bills I had placed there. I would like to think he will remember our visit; I will. It doesn't take much to be nice to people, sometimes it's even worth the effort. Too bad we have to be reminded to do so. Ma

Theres a local liquor store along the highway that has a handwritten "Be Nice" sign posted out front everyday.

I went in once and asked the owner why he didn't just have a permanent one made up so he didn't have to make a new one everyday?

He said that the local Sign Ordinance, forbade any unapproved signs and that he could never get on the calendar to have his sign reviewd by the town!!!

I also have a small plaque that my daughter gave me for Christmas it reads..."Because, nice matters"

indeed!
