Friday Eats

Alright folks, here's the pick for this week's restaurant. I've driven by Saigon Noodle House in Provo so many times over the years- looks like a dump on the outside, and the inside a little bit too... but holy smokes, the food was surprisingly tasty (a tad on the "greasy-spoon" side), and cheap! The Craftsman and I ate there for $12- total! Apparently other people know about this place because by the time we left, every seat was filled, which made me happy. I like it when Mom and Pop establishments get business. So, give it a try- let me know what you think.

(I searched Google Images for "Eggroll"- here's what came up.)

I'm so glad that you are reviewing the hole-in-the-wall, non-chain places. I can tell you're going to get a good variety. Thanks for the new ideas of eateries!

Amen!!! Sigon is the best Cam and I eat there at least 2 times a week! Super cheap, good, and they give you tons of food!

Do they serve life-sized egg rolls?!

Practically!

Umm...uhh...that eggroll kind of looks like a dookie. But if you're in Bountiful, skip the Peiwei (blagh!) and head to the Pine Garden. It's a locally-owned, inexpensive Chinese restaurant! Or, if you're near downtown SLC, head to Bangkok Classic on 8th S and State. Sadly, you won't have to wait at all for a table. There might be one or perhaps two other parties in the entire place. It's a bit of a dive, but you'll want to go back the next night for more. MMMM! Cheers!

Oh, one more thing: You guys need to try Osaka on Center Street in Provo, just west of University Ave, north of the tabernacle. Inexpensive and awesome Japanese food! Their Miso soup is the most simple and delicious I've ever had, and so is their Miso salad dressing! Try it; you'll see what I mean. Cheers!

Jim's, a local Orem landmark, independent restaurant/cafe/diner, and Scott's favorite place for breakfast, closed right after Christmas. There are still 7 Jim's along the Wasatch Front, but how sad is that? Another indie bites the dust.

Seems there are plenty of indie "foreign" food restaurants, but are there any independent "American" restaurants? Ma

Good point Ma- any suggestions? I can think of burger joints that aren't chain (Tommy's Burger, Sammy's, etc.) but what about the good ol' blue plate special- meat and two sides? That's what I think of as "American," and I guess there's always Chicks Cafe in Heber, but what else?

To answer my own question: Ruth's Diner up Emigration Canyon in SLC. But how about Utah County? Oh, I contacted Jim's, and the owner said their lease was up in the Orem place, and they decided not to extend.
